Tru-Turn
Turbo-Cool
Spinners
Specifically designed for electric airplanes, these
machined aluminum spinners have cutouts on the
backplates and nose cone. ;e spokes are machined
into a blower configuration so that when the unit
spins, it forces air through it. ;e air has to come
from somewhere, so the cone has openings for
airflow. I installed one spinner on my pattern plane
so I could monitor the cooling e;ects throughout the
flight. Because the motor was mounted on the other
side of the firewall, there was not much di;erence.
However, after I had drilled out a couple of airflow
holes in the firewall, the motor ran five to six degrees
cooler.
I mounted another spinner onto an aerobatic
aircraft on which the motor sat directly behind the
spinner backplate. ;is one showed a little over
a 10-degree drop in temperature throughout the
flight (even on flights when I hovered the aircraft
for extended periods of time). If you fly an electric
plane, this is the spinner you want on your plane’s
nose. ;e approximate weight gain is only about
0.25 ounce (not including the adapter kit, which
is sold separately). ;e Turbo-Cool spinners are
available with custom cuts to fit your motor/prop
combination (no charge) and are also available in all
the anodized colors that Tru- Turn o;ers ($15 extra).
;ey cost from $32.95 to $64.95. – John Reid

BOOMA RC SWITCHES
Booma RC is an Australian company built on a love for giant-
scale RC airplanes. Rick Gell founded the Australian Scale
Aerobatics Associations and followed his heart into developing
high-quality RC electronics. Among BOOMA RC’s products is
a line of microprocessor onboard switches, including the Iggy
ignition switch, the Wallaby single battery receiver switch, and
the programmable LCD display Intelliswitch V2. Both the Iggy
and the Wallaby switches have an LED visual indicator with the
Wallaby also providing a low-voltage alarm. ;e state-of-the-art
Intelliswitch V2 features two independent switching circuits, dual
battery redundancy, voltage monitoring, selectable battery types,
internal temperature, battery consumption, time of last flight,
and a built-in flight log of all flights on the installed airframe. ;e
Wallaby costs $35; the Iggy is $39; and the Intelliswitch V2 is $59.
Each comes with a 12-month warranty. — David Vaught
